Title: Is golf really dying or is it already dead?
Post by: Ray Beaufait on July 27, 2014, 01:49:20 PM
All indicators indicate that the game of golf is dying.  A big drop in the number of players, golf courses, equipment sold, etc. over the past 10 years.

WHY??????

In my opinion there are many reasons.  Golf has run into the perfect storm.  Everything coming together at once to harm the popularity of the game.

I.  The game is hard.  It take hours of playing and practice time to become an average golfer.

2.  The game is expensive.  Golf Clubs, green fees, golf cart, membership dues etc.

3.  Young people have so many other activities to choose from and want instant gratification.  Not possible with golf.

4.  A round of golf takes to long.  About 6 hours when you consider going and coming from  the golf course.

I also believe the game of golf is dying because of the disparity of income in the US.  The rich are getting richer and the poor and middle class are seeing no or little income growth.  For golf to survive we need the youth of America and the masses playing the game.  If incomes or disposable income does not rise for the majority of Americans golf will continue to decline.  Simple arithmetic.

I think this is a great move....wish other would join you.  Sam's event has a lot of potential to grow big.  It is all marketing.
