13 YEAR WORLD FINALIST

My name is Steve Griffith. I am a 1990 graduate of Miami University and 2005 graduate of NOVA Southeastern University. I am married to my beautiful wife (Diana) and have two wonderful adult daughters (Remey and Daina). I have enjoyed many varied occupations including construction worker, college golf coach, and public school teacher.

I started competing in professional long drive events at the age of 51. Due to some early successes, long driving quickly became a very important part of my life. Hitting a golf ball as long and straight as I possibly could became my quest. I am grateful that the sport of long driving has provided me with opportunities to meet many very talented competitors from all over the world. Today, at age 64, I can continue to be able to associate with those competitors because of the creation of events for long drive veterans.  I would like to thank Sam Turner, David Brinker, Charlie Thomas, and Ray Beaufait for creating the USSLD and providing opportunities for all of us long drive "old guys".

Steve Clement

I live and work in the Tulsa,OK area and started competing six years ago at the age of 59 after attending a local event as a spectator.

I competed in the Super Sr. Div. for two years and was never able to make the ReMax World Championships. In 2010 the format changed and I made my first trip to Mesquite. I finished in the middle of the Legends group but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In 2011 I was more fortunate and made the Final four and lost to my first opponent (World Champion, Steve Griffith) which gave me a tie for third place with Obie Anderson. Again in 2012 I made the Final four after a 3 ball shoot out with Roy Bechtol ( Buy the skin of my teeth) and finished second in the Legends after loosing to World Champion, David Brinker. After aging enough to make the Masters Div in 2013, again I finished second behind World Champion, Rick Barry.

The last few years it has been great fun to meet and compete with so many Great individuals. I can always tell my grand kids that "I've been Beat by The Best Hitters in the World "

Thanks Sam for giving another venue to have a little more fun ! =

DIXON SPEAR

2014 United States Senior Long Drive Championships  - Legends Champion

Dixon Spear - Legends Champion - Longest Drive 342.1 - Oregon
Ray

Thank you for everything you, Sam, Charlie and David have done. I hope this  thing will continue to grow and become a new chapter for  LD.

Here are my accomplishments:

Started LD at 58 by entering a local in the SS division in NW District (# 9 at the time) and qualified for regional in Orting the next week. I did not fare very well but was determined to do better next year.

2009 won the SS division regional finals in Medford with finals drive of 346. Longest drive was 363 in round 1.

2009 Mesquite: out in 2 rounds. Had knee issues

2010 won the inaugural Heartland classic in Decatur in Legends Division with a finals drive of 314, besting David and Griffith. (there were unfavorable weather conditions). The win was an "exception" to the Legends finals in Mesquite that year. That is, the $800  entrance fee to enter the Legends Division was paid from the winner take all event in Decatur. (Sam paid my entry fee)

2010 Mesquite finals: placed 6th

2011 Mesquite finals: out in 3 rounds in the Legends Division and 14th in GC Division.

2012: Won the Utah State Championship in the Legends Division with final's drive of 325. 2nd in GC behind Pat Dempsey. ( 20-30mph headwinds all day). Longest drive was 337

2012 Mesquite finals: place 7th

2013 Heartland Classic place 3rd behind David and Griffith. Longest drive was 339

2013 Mesquite finals: placed 8th. Longest drives was 342 rd 1, and 344 rd 2.

2014 Heartland Classic: ???

It seems the competition intensifies and you slow down a bit as you get older!!

I think 2015 is going to be an interesting year with many turning 65. The Grand Masters Division will have a very strong group of hitters.

My back ground is Accounting. Currently own a business with my wife named Signature Glass which supplies the home builders with beveled IG units for their higher end homes.

Hope this helps.

CHRIS MCCURDY- SUPER SENIOR  & GC DIVISIONS

Age: 55 this June

Won Minn regional; qualified for Senior in Mesquite first four years competing (2004, 05, 06, 07);

Earned LDA Tour card and competed on the tour in 2004;

Won Richard Rodger's team event in Conneaut Lake with Walker and someone else; finished top 5 and top 10 in Richard Rodger's Conneaut Lake events.

I think I won an ALDA event, definitely finished 2nd in an ALDA open division event as a senior.

I also competed in a few Metters, a Bullard's event once, a Hartsell event once, and a number of Players Tour events all as a senior in the open division.

longest drive was at a St Louis local, 425 yds. Sam Turner can tell you my record in Heartlands/Decatur events, I have won a few of them and earned more than I spent (only positive cash flow I have in LD!!!) I also beat Steve Griffin like a redheaded stepchild!

I also finished 2nd to Jackie Scholar(??) In the Diamond in the Desert or Desert Launch one of those years and it shot me straight into Mesquite without having to qualify.

I only began competing at 45, so that's it.

Chris McCurdy

HOLLYWOOD - THE LEGEND

Brad Pearsall

BRADLEY "HOLLYWOOD" PEARSALL

Former RE/MAX World Long Drive Finalist

I met Hollywood in southern Ohio in 2005 and he immediately impressed Me with his friendly personality and his 335 yard drives.

Hollywood's only comment on his profile was "I hate Steve Griffith".

JACKIE SHOLAR - SUPER SENIOR

April 2009 LDA Player of the Month
.
Residence:
Gracey, KY
.
Occupation:
Farmer, Buyer for Universal Leaf Tobacco Co.
.
Family:
Teresa (wife), AJ and RJ (twin sons)

Jackie won the senior division at 2009 Diamond in the Desert Classic.
There were lots of great hitters in the field.

Jackie says the RE/MAX WLDC senior division gets stronger each year.
You have to bring your "A" game every time you step on the tee box, but
Jackie loves the competition.

Jackie also won the DDC senior division in 2007 and finished runner-up in
2008.  Jackie hates to go to locals and regionals because they are tough.
Jackie has not gone through senior division local and regional qualifying
because of the Diamond in the Desert Classic.

At 2009 DDC, Jackie came through with a clutch sixth ball to win Rd. 6
and advance to the head-to-head finals against Tom Garber.

What stood out from his DDC finals match against Tom Garber was
All I wanted was to hit some good drives because Tom had been hitting it
good all day. Tom is such a great competitor and a great guy. I actually
had been pulling for him all day.

Jackie has a background in baseball, having played at collegiate level
and  being a high school coach.

Jackie says there are similarities  between swinging a baseball bat and
swinging a driver?  The baseball swing and the long drive swing are pretty much the same. You
must generate club head speed to hit a golf ball far and for baseball,
you must have quick wrists and hands to generate bat speed.

What advise does Jackie give someone new to LD?
Never give up. Keep hitting because you never know what will happen in
the sport of long driving.

NEIL SIMPSON - SUPER SENIOR

For the past 11+ years I have been involved in long-drive, not only through competing in Senior competition, but also through running locals and helping in regional LDA qualifiers.

I have also served as a Long-Drive Rep for Graman, for Alpha, and for House of Forged/Long Drive Team.  This has given me the opportunity to interact with many competitors, and I have been honored to build drivers for several champions.

Dan Fournier

2014 United States Senior Long Drive Championships - 2014 Grand Champion  & 2015 Legends Champion

Dan Fournier - Grand Champion Champion - Longest Drive 344 - Canada

I’m a golfer since age 45  and at this time I’m a 7 handicap.  I started the long drive competition 2012 at age 57 when I  retired from my job at Air Canada, I participated in my first long drive event in Québec. It was my first competition and I wasn’t ready.  I had only two drivers and I broke one at the warm up 5 minutes before they started the event.  I continued with my nine degree driver and I finished 14th  in the grand champion division.  In 2013 I did better at Mesquite.  I finished in 6 place in 2014.  2014 was my best year with my win at Decatur (USSLD) in the grand champion division and I finished 3rd at Mesquite.

My wife and I have been married for 25 years and I have two children.  My son  and my daughter go at the same university.  Ray I hope I can see you again at Decatur with all the other competitors.
