A rookie on the PGA TOUR after finishing T26 at the 2002 Qualifying Tournament. Played the Hooters Tour in 2001-02. Won the Myrtle Beach event in 2002 while finishing 10th on the money list. Biggest thrill in golf was winning the 2000 U.S. Amateur World Team competition in Germany. Semi-finalist at the 1999 U.S. Amateur. Three-time Ohio Amateur champion, including a 15-stroke victory in 2000. Formerly the world's No. 1-ranked amateur by Golfweek before turning pro in 2000. All-America selection at Kent State. Became interested in golf through his grandparents, who own a public golf course in Ostrander, OH. Hardly anyone knew Ben Curtis before the British Open. He was a PGA Tour rookie who had never cracked the top 10. He was No. 396 in the world ranking and a 500-1 longshot with the British bookies. The first reaction from the local caddie hired on the spot to guide Curtis around Royal St. George’s was, “Ben who?” Ben has now shocked the world by beating the likes of Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Davis Love and other big name players down the stretch in this years 2003 British Open. Ben Curtis is the first player since Francis Ouimet at the 1913 U.S. Open to win the first major championship he ever played. I have a feeling that this is just the start of a great golf career for Mr. Ben Curtis. |
