Karrie Webb
The LPGA's Australian phenom

Karrie Webb
H ere it is. The LPGA's first million-dollar swing, a classic blend of power and accuracy. Karrie is one of the longest drivers on the Tour and second in Greens in Regulation.

She starts with a relatively strong grip , which eliminates the need for excessive hand action to square the clubface at impact.

You've probably noticed Karrie's long, pronounced waggle before every swing. I love this because it rehearses a wide takeaway path for the clubhead. This is especially helpful for golfers prone to picking the club up abruptly with the hands on the backswing or taking the club too far inside during the takeaway. A waggle also reduces tension and increases the sense of rhythm necessary for consistency.

Karrie's backswing creates a tremendous windup. At the top, her entire upper body has pivoted behind the ball. She also has turned her shoulders more than 90 degrees, but has retained great leverage by keeping her hands high. This creates an opportunity to generate a lot of clubhead speed, which is why, at 5-foot-6, she averages 255 yards off the tee.

At impact, note how the shaft is still behind the left arm and her head has stayed well behind the ball. This combination creates a shallow blow into the back of the ball with her driver, creating optimum trajectory and maximum distance.

KARRIE'S SWING KEYS
  1. ALIGNMENT COMES FIRST. Most important at address is to make sure my entire body--feet, knees, hips, and shoulders -- is aligned exactly at my target.
  2. WAGGLE LONG FOR PROPER PATH. I take a long waggle before each swing. I'll move the clubhead along the first two feet or so of my intended backswing, then I'll bring it back to the ball before starting my real swing. This long waggle ingrains the proper path and resets the correct feeling immediately before every swing.
  3. COMPLETE THE BACKSWING. I want the sensation that I've turned my upper body over my right leg with my back to the target.
