Stuart Appleby's Golf Swing HighlightsStuart Appleby still recalls the days on the dairy farm in Cohuna, Australia, hitting golf shots from paddock to paddock once the chores were completed. Now, he's a professional. But he admits that every day, every tournament, he's still learning. |
Appleby started perfecting that attitude as a schoolboy. Until he was 17, he was an Australian Rules football player. "I loved the camaraderie you could have, training sessions. There are so many great memories," he said.
There are also great memories of the Victoria Institute of Sport, where Appleby prepared in Melbourne for a career while still in school. He won the 1991 Queensland Open as an amateur and the Victorian Amateur title. In 1992, he was with the Victoria Institute Of Sport when he met an Australian girl, Renay White, while standing at the baggage carousel at Los Angeles International Airport. They eventually married. She was killed in a tragic accident in London the week after Stuart played in the British Open in 1998. He won four tournaments on the Australasian Tour before joining the Nike (now Buy.Com) Tour in 1995. He was the eighth player to win his first tournament on that Tour, the Monterrey Open, and earned his Tour card by finishing fifth on that circuit's money list in '95. By 1997 he had his first PGA Tour win, the Honda Classic. He won a tournament in his first three years on the Tour, '97-'98-'99. Appleby lives in the greater Orlando, Fl., area at Isleworth Country Club, where he is a frequent practice partner of Tiger Woods and Mark O'Meara. |
