2007 INDIANA STATE HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPION AND COURSE RECORD

Tyler Duncan fired a 63 -- a state finals and course record -- for a two-day total of 136, one stroke better than Mishawaka Marian sophomore Adam Sumrall.

Duncan's bogey-free round broke the IHSAA's 18-hole record of 66 that was shared by Warren Central's Justin Wenger, Homestead's Nate Wine and defending champ Anthony Novak of Michigan City. The course mark of 64 had been shared by pros Denny Hepler and Todd Smith and amateur Pete Wojtowicz.

Duncan, a 5-8, 135-pound even-keeled junior, had history in his sights midway through his round.

"When I made the turn, that's what I was shooting for," he said. "I didn't feel pressure. I made sure I was calm before every shot and went out and played."

His primary offseason instructor has been his uncle, Andrew Johnson, who was the state medalist as a senior at Columbus North in 1990. Johnson now lives in Orlando, Fla., and plays on the Nationwide Tour.

Duncan's performance, two strokes better than his previous best, was about as routine as a record-setting round can be. He missed only one green in regulation, and an 8-foot putt for par on the par-3 third hole was his closest brush with adventure.

Duncan was competing in the state finals for the third consecutive year. He had shot 72-87 as a freshman and 77-75 last year, according to coach Doug Bieker.

"To come out and do this on the second day is great," Bieker said. "I've coached 30 years and haven't seen a round like that at the high school level."

It was a dramatic turnabout from his experience at the regional, where he finished double bogey-bogey-bogey and Columbus North fell one stroke short of having the opportunity to improve upon last year's runner-up finish in the state meet.

"Nobody really played well that day," Duncan said. "But I felt bad. I wanted the team to be here more than anything. "I just went on like I normally would and kept practicing and playing, but it was just up in my head."
Tyler's goals in his own words - 2006

As a junior at Columbus North High School, I must begin pursuing the following goals:

In the winter of 2006, I will spend time increasing my strength and flexibility in the gym. I will also be improving my swing to allow me to play at a higher level.

The high school season will begin in March of 2007. I plan to play to the best of my ability throughout the season and achieve All State Honors. I plan to play in the State Finals and contend for the State Title. In the summer of 2007, I plan to play in as many AJGA events as possible. This will allow me to get national recognition and be well known by many college coaches. In the winter of 2007, I will spend additional time improving my strength and flexibility in the gym. I will also continue improving my swing.

My senior season will begin in March of 2008 and I plan to prepare myself to play at the college level. I plan to earn All State honors for the third consecutive season and play towards a State Title for the fourth consecutive season. In the summer of 2008, I plan to prepare myself to play at the Division 1 level.

Throughout my college years I plan to continue perfecting my swing to allow me the opportunity to play at the highest college level. I will continue to improve my strength and flexibility in the gym. I will use my high school and college experiences to help me achieve my ultimate goal playing on the PGA Tour.
