Bart Bryant is a 42-year-old professional who has taken the qualifying school route to the tour six times. He has done it the hard way. Until 2004, Bryant never finished higher than 124th on the money list. He went 116 months between the third top-10 finish of his career (the 1992 Hardees Golf Classic) and the fourth (the 2002 Kemper Open).

Bart has said in a recent interview. "There were times when I laid in my bed at night and I kind of thought, 'What am I doing? I need to get a job and provide for my family a little better than what I'm doing right now,' " Bryant said. "Luckily I have a really good support system of friends back home. I have a brother who kept pushing me, and my wife Cathy has always been very patient and very supportive. She never once said, 'Why don't you think about doing something else?' So I give her all the credit in the world for sticking with me. It's paid off, and she deserves it a lot more than I do."

The first big win came September 2004 at the Valero Texas Open. Bryant won his first career victory, shooting 60-67 on the weekend to finish three strokes ahead of Patrick Sheehan. Bart won $630,000, but more important Bryant had job security — in the form of a two-year tour exemption — for the first time in his career.

Bart stated "Finally, I got to pick my schedule," Bryant said. "It changed a lot. For me personally, it just gave me a lot of confidence. It said to me, 'You have the ability to play with these guys out here.' "

Still, Bryant's first victory came the same weekend the world was watching the U.S. fall apart in the Ryder Cup. His next win though had the likes of Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, David Toms and Couples were in the field, which Bryant takes as "validation" that he can play with the best "if I'm at the top of my game."

"Fortunately," Bryant said, "I can get there occasionally."

Bryant was winles, with only four top 10s, in his first 186 tour starts. Bryant also underwent operations on both elbows and rotator cuff. Unlucky? Bryant suspects it was a matter of just not being that good. The injuries he thinks may have made him a better player. Since the operations he says he now works smarter not harder. He has five top 10s, including three victories, in his past 20 starts.

At this time, he is a guy who is 9th ($3.2 million) on the tour money list and ranked 31st in the world rankings. Bryant has more money this season (2005) as he had in his entire career (18 years)through 2004. Very good for a guy that went to Q-school six times. He also seems like a great guy and I hope he continues with his success.

Bart destroyed the best in world in the 2005 Tour Championship winning by 6 strokes over second place Tiger Woods. Again proving he can on his day beat the best in the world. Bryant who didn't win on the tour until last year in the Texas Open, has added two big trophies this year (2005) - The Memorial in June and the season-ending Tour Championship for the top 30 on the money list. Again, Bart seems like a humble nice guy and I hope he wins many more times on the PGA tour.
